Is Video AI Next Big Security Step for Schools?

As artificial Intelligence (AI) coupled with video analytics becomes a more common feature in security products, the next logical market for its usage could be K-12 schools, colleges, and university campuses.

According to securityinfowatch.com, video analytics have been around since the 1990s, enabling the automatic analysis of images to detect and transform temporal and spatial events into decision guidance and business intelligence.

Recent developments in image analysis technology, including the use of AI, has had a disruptive impact, allowing video analytics to offer more value by providing actionable information and making security operations more efficient and cost effective.

“AI has revolutionized security technology to the extent that an autonomous AI-enabled security system can automatically detect a gun being discharged, identify and track the suspect, and initiate an alert to emergency services,” according to James McKnight, product manager at Johnson Controls Tyco.

Traditional video surveillance generates vast amounts of video data, which is overwhelming for human operators to monitor and accurately identify critical events. AI enabled video analytics separates genuine alerts from the noise in real time, enabling operators to focus on the most critical events on live or recorded video.

It can also eliminate the need for a physical access card to gain entry to an area, while still proving, with a high degree of accuracy, that the person is supposed to have access to that area.

Sonitrol Great Lakes has a dedicated Technology Solutions Team tasked with evaluating and testing security products new to the marketplace to determine their suitability and effectiveness in various settings, including schools. We invite architects, contractors, and administrators to contact us for expert advice on choosing and upgrading security systems.
