Optimist Club Announces ‘Officer of the Year’ Recipients; Sonitrol Tri-County Sponsors Annual Law Day Celebration in Flint

Flint, Mich. – Eight area officers will be recognized by the Optimist Club of Downtown Flint at a luncheon celebrating National Law Day on May 6, 2013.  Sonitrol Tri-County – one of Michigan’s largest locally owned and operated security firms – is proud to again sponsor the annual event, which will be held at the GASC Technology Center in Flint.

The awards honor deserving officers who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and genuine commitment to their profession and the citizens they serve.  Sonitrol has been sponsoring the event for the past five years.

“We are excited to once again host this great event, honoring officers for their heroism, dedication, and outstanding service to the public,” said Mike Buckel, 2013 Chairman of the Optimist Club of Downtown Flint selection committee, as well as VP of Operations for Sonitrol Tri-County.

The Optimist Club of Downtown Flint congratulates each of this year’s honorees:

• Detective Sergeant Al Ogg, Sergeant Ron Ainslee, Sergeant Kellee Robinson, Michigan State Police; Detective Randy Kimes, Flint Township Police; Sergeant Leigh Golden, City of Flint Police: These five outstanding men and women are members of the task force that worked tirelessly for nearly two years to bring Elias Abuelazam to justice.

Abuelazam committed a series of knife stabbings in Flint and surrounding communities, leaving five men dead and nine others seriously injured.  The case became known as the “Genesee County Serial Stabber.”

• Officer Ronnie Summers, City of Flint Police: After witnessing the collision of two vehicles, Officer Summers, without regard to his own safety, entered one of the burning vehicles and pulled the unconscious occupant to the street.

• Officer Troy Simpson, City of Flint Police: After being dispatched to a disturbance complaint, Officer Simpson found that a woman had been shot, and a gunman was holding a two-year-old child hostage, dangling her out of a window and waving his handgun. The gunman dropped the child, at which time Officer Simpson broke cover and caught the child without regard for his own safety.

• Officer Tom Plumb, Mt. Morris Police: Officer Plum provided the evidence necessary to charge an area couple with Criminal Sexual Conduct 1 and Manufacturing Child Pornography Using the Internet. The mother of the 6-month-old victim received 25 – 40 years in prison and the father a life sentence.

“Especially in these challenging times,” says Mike Wanstreet, Sonitrol Tri-County president, “it is important to pause and salute the men and women who fearlessly serve our communities and citizens. It continues to be Sonitrol’s privilege to honor those officers who demonstrate heroism, valor and a great respect for law.”

President Eisenhower first declared National Law Day in 1958. It is meant to reflect on the role of law in the foundation of the country and recognize its importance for society.
