Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, schools have taken\nprecautionary steps for visitor verification and identification for the sake of\nsecurity. They have also had to go a long way to make sure that visitors do not\ncome into the school without safely checking in via the lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, funneling everyone in and out of the same\nsmall-ish indoor space has created new health hazards considering the pandemic\nand what future health and safety guidelines might lie ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the simplest steps for safety in this strange time\nis to limit the number of people coming in and out of the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the CDC put it: \u201cLimit any nonessential visitors,\nvolunteers, and activities involving external groups or organizations as\npossible \u2013 especially with individuals who are not from the local geographic\narea (e.g., community, town, city, county).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other\nvisitor security steps may include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Visitor management software (VMS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VMS is an electronic version of the visitor sign-in sheet\n(or visitor logbook) that has been used in facilities for years and is being\nimplemented more frequently in schools across the country. While more expensive\nthan a traditional sign-in logbook, visitor management software offers a more\nefficient sign-in process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Require every visitor to wear a badge while on school\ngrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not enough to simply document the visitor\u2019s arrival\nat the building. Staff will not have to wonder who is roaming the halls if the\nvisitor is wearing a visitor badge. Some visitor badges change color overnight\nto prevent reuse. These extra-secure visitor badges provide a visual alert to\nthe security staff or employees that a person\u2019s presence should be questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Distinguish between kinds of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly identifying the type of visitor will allow anyone\nencountering that person to know if they can be in any given area. Parents,\nvendors, contractors, substitute teachers, student teachers, and temporary\nworkers are all categories of badge titles for schools to consider using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Publish visitor policy content on your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A school website is the perfect place to communicate\nvisitor policy to the public. Such messages may include visitor responsibilities, where to park, what\nentrances to use, cell phone policy, and any special restrictions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Direct visitors where to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School visitors should be welcomed if their reason for\nbeing there is legitimate. Funnel visitors to one entrance. A clearly marked\nsingle entrance, with access control restrictions on other doors, will help\nsecurity protocol. Upon entering the school building and getting registered by\nthe visitor management system, the visitor should be directed \u2013 or, better yet,\nescorted \u2013 to the room, area, or people they are there to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Temperature screening<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC advises that thermal imaging systems and\nnon-contact infrared thermometers, which are non-contact temperature assessment\ndevices, may be used to measure a visitor’s temperature. An elevated\ntemperature is one way to identify a person who may have a COVID-19 infection.\nHowever, the CDC cautions that an infected person may be contagious without an\nelevated temperature or other easily detectable symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Consider\npre-enrollment.\n\nPre-enrolling frequent\nvisitors, like parents and vendors, into a visitor management system ahead of\ntime can cut down on registration times. When that person returns to the school,\ntheir information can be found in the database and will not have to be\nreentered or have their driver\u2019s license rescanned.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
