This year, Oct. 9-15 is being observed as the 100th anniversary of National Fire Prevention Week; commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and an opportune time for educators to focus on fire safety<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire safety awareness and prevention remains a key issue\nfor students and educators alike. In observance of Fire Prevention Week\nstarting Oct. 9, Sonitrol\nGreat Lakes<\/a> has compiled a few important precautions to share with\ncolleagues and students to reinforce fire safety in and outside the classroom\nall year long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing cuts down the risk of fire loss like education.\nArm students and staff with the knowledge and skills they need to approach fire\nsafety effectively, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing Alarms – <\/strong>Educators should\nnottake for granted that a child understands what a fire alarm sounds\nlike, so it’s important to teach children to identify your school\u2019s alarm early\nso that they can\u2019t confuse it for any other sound. For students with hearing\nproblems, identify other, non-auditory cues to alert them to a fire emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Escape and Evacuation Routes – <\/strong>Each room should\nhave a sign that identifies two ways out of the room in case of fire. Hallways,\nstairwells and other areas should also clearly indicate evacuation routes and\nprotocols. Make sure that students understand not only where the exits are\nlocated, but also how to use them. Demonstrate how to use alternate escape\nroutes in an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practice Drills \u2013 <\/strong>Regular fire drills\nare essential in a school environment. Students as well as staff need to know\nhow to respond to a fire well before an actual emergency occurs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rules, Regulations and Fire Safety Standards – <\/strong>Public\nbuildings must adhere to local fire codes in terms of occupancy and activity.\nIf unsure about your school\u2019s occupancy limits, check with the local fire\ndepartment, and conduct a thorough investigation to make sure the school\nbuilding is up to code.
