With students and educators back in the classrooms,\ndistrict leaders need to be able to reassure everyone in their school community\nthat school safety is a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

District leaders should always be ready to explain what\ntheir school safety plans are and how their administration arrived at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be prepared to answer these five school safety questions from\nparents, educators, and students as the new school year proceeds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. What is our district-wide approach to safety and what\nmechanisms are in place to ensure it is known and followed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we\u2019ve seen over the past year, emergencies due to\nnatural disasters, medical situations, active shooter threats, and other causes\ncan happen at any place and time. Having a comprehensive security and safety\nprogram is one of district leaders\u2019 most important responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. What is your district doing to deter attacks and\nviolence?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violence is preventable. Early detection, assessment, and\nintervention in cases where individuals may pose a threat are crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putting tools and technology in place to detect and\nbecome aware of threats is an important part of a holistic approach. Programs\nto educate students, staff, and the community on how to recognize concerning\nbehavior and report tips and information anonymously are high-stakes today.\nRapid assessment and intervention are key once a tip or risk has been\nidentified. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. When it\u2019s not a drill, what is in place to ensure\nseamless, fast communication with first responders, and how do we ensure safety\nuntil help arrives?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average duration of a violent critical incident is 5\nminutes long \u2013 and the national average law enforcement response time is 3 to 5\nminutes. During those precious minutes, it\u2019s imperative that school officials\ncan communicate with law enforcement and first responders so they can\naccurately gauge the situation and put plans into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. How do we reunite students with parents and guardians?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning for reunification starts with having accurate\nand up-to-date documentation of students, volunteers, and staff \u2013 and making\nsure that information is accessible during an emergency to help limit chaos.\nNext comes figuring out evacuation routes from all parts of the campus, with\ncontingencies for different scenarios and considerations for mobility-limited\nindividuals or those with special needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. How do we maintain a culture and practice of school\nsafety?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look ahead and identify your priorities. Address ongoing\nchallenges. Adapt current plans for changing circumstances. Follow up on\nopportunities to be proactive and improve on what is already in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
