What does that mean for students? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end of daylight-saving Time (DST) means that students\nand families should consider extra safety measures when traveling home from\nschool in the evening and be patient with themselves in adjusting to the change\nin time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonitrolverified.com\">Sonitrol\nGreat Lakes<\/a> invites school administrators to please share with\nparents and their children these daylight-saving safety tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When walking or biking home from school:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Wear bright colors.<\/em> Winter means\nshorter days, and it might be darker on the way home from school. Wear bright\ncolors that can easily be spotted by drivers, or wear a backpack, jacket, or\nhat featuring reflective fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Don\u2019t go alone.<\/em> If old enough to walk or bike without\nan adult, arrange to travel home with a friend or group. Parents with younger\nchildren may want to reconsider having them walk during the winter months with\nless daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Stay alert.<\/em> It is easy to get distracted by a\nmobile phone, cars, and other pedestrians when walking to school. Always\nremember to keep alert and aware of one\u2019s surroundings and walk on the\ndesignated sidewalk or walkway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cross the street safely.<\/em> Maintain focus and\nlook for oncoming traffic in both directions before crossing the street. Continue\nto look for vehicles until having finished crossing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When riding the bus:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Get to the bus stop early.<\/em> Arrive at least 5\nminutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive at the bus stop. Ensure that your\nchild is always six feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb\/roadway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Get on, off, and ride the bus safely.<\/em> Wait until\nthe bus has completely stopped and the door is open before attempting to enter\nor exit and use the handrail on the stairs. When the bus is in motion, stay\nseated, keep all body parts and school materials inside the bus, ensure the\naisle is clear of books and bags, and use a seatbelt if one is provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Always use caution around the bus.<\/em> The United\nStates Department of Transportation states that almost all bus-related injuries\ninvolving children happen outside and around the bus. The \u201cdanger zone\u201d is\nconsidered 10 feet around the bus on all sides. Never walk behind a school bus\nand always make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing (at least 10\nfeet) in front of the bus to ensure that you are seen. If your child drops\nsomething near the school bus like a phone or a book, the safest thing to do is\nto tell the bus driver right away before attempting to retrieve the item to\nensure they are aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When adjusting to the time change:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Create a routine.<\/em> For children, it\nis especially important to create and stick with a routine to adjust to the\nchange in time. Routines create structure and promote mental, physical, and\nemotional health. For example: set specific times to turn electronics off, be\nin bed, and have lights out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Be sympathetic.<\/em> Adjusting sleep patterns will affect\neveryone differently. Remember to be patient with yourself and those around you\nduring this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Get enough sleep.<\/em> According to Johns\nHopkins University, \u201cStudies have shown that kids who regularly get an adequate\namount of sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and\noverall mental and physical health.\u201d Identify the baseline number of hours your\nchild(ren) needs to feel rested and ensure their bedtime routine reflects this\neach day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month, our clocks \u201cfell back\u201d an hour, resulting in darker evening commutes.
