Be Prepared for Spring’s Inclement Weather

Spring has finally arrived in the Midwest. Unfortunately, along with the warmer temperatures, longer days and blooming plants comes unpredictable weather.  In Illinois and Michigan, spring to mid-summer (March through July) is the most active time for severe storms and tornadoes.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) being aware and prepared can greatly increase your chances of staying safe. By following these simple guidelines:

Be aware of your risk
When conditions are right for severe weather, the National Weather Service will announce a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch. You should check your local station often for updates on the weather conditions. If a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued, it means that a storm or tornado has been sighted in your area. It’s important to pay close attention as conditions can change rapidly.

Take action
In the event of a tornado warning, you may only have a few minutes to move to safety. Preplanning is very important. Practice a family tornado drill once a year and periodically check that all family members know where the designated “tornado shelter” is. Go to the lowest level of your home or to an interior room without windows. Keep tuned to your local radio station for updates and further information.

Spread the word
Being prepared is about helping your community. Share your weather and emergency preparedness story and you’ll inspire others to prepare.
During this season of unpredictable weather, be alert and look for approaching storms. And know the danger signs:
• Dark or greenish sky
• Large hail
• A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
• Loud roar, similar to a freight train

Be aware of your surroundings and seek shelter immediately if conditions warrant. A little bit of forethought could literally save your life.
