Student, Community Support Runs Wide for Improved School Security

School districts that take on capital projects to improve security are finding greater acceptance from students, staff and the community. In the words of three school district administrators who oversaw Sonitrol Great Lakes – installed projects at their facilities, which were all previously “open campuses” have now earned outright support and gratitude.

At Laingsburg Community Schools in Michigan, Superintendent Matt Shastal leads a four-building district comprised of 1,160 students and 120 staff members. Following the installation of a state-of-the-art security system, which includes strategically placed cameras, alert systems, and entryway controls, Shastal remarked that “students have commented that they are very happy that their school is safer.”

In nearby Haslett, Michigan, Steven Cook is superintendent of Haslett Public Schools, which has 2,860 students spread over five buildings. ”We realized the need to boost our security, but at the same time didn’t want to take away the friendliness of our spaces,” he said. Following the completion of its security system project, Cook noted, “Most of the feedback from our teachers and community has been positive. They like the idea that students and staff felt safer.”

And in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Phil Bongiorno, facilities director at Lincoln Consolidated Schools partnered with Sonitrol Great Lakes for a security system project covering eight buildings serving 3,800 students. “The overwhelming response I get from staff and community members is a joy that their precious children are being protected,” he said.
